In a country where millions turn to their nearest coast for cultural cues, there are some among us who are far-sighted and only see fuzzy blobs of bling and asymmetrical haircuts when we look east and west. Frankly, those blobs don’t look any more cultured than LaQueef, the man who stands on the corner of 8 Mile and Greenfield asking for your empties, and at least he’s guaranteed 10 cents for each can. I don’t know anyone who can say the same for an asymmetrical haircut.
The challenge to find meaning and substance in your life in an area known for its deprecation, dreariness, and road construction is a beautiful one, and I want to enjoy this place for what it is while I’m here. Maybe with enough reflection, celebration, critique, and discussion, this place will shine as bright as any big city, and those big cities might realize they aren’t so different from their dirty-kneed sisters like Detroit. Then again, maybe I just want to talk about myself. Either way, I hope you enjoy.
Oh Ms. Ruud, how I love you. I loved you the first time I laid eyes on you, the first time I heard you speak, the first time I read your blog. You’re an amazing woman with amazing prowess and beauty to boot. We’re lucky to have you on our planet.
